It has been revealed AFL great James Hird and his wife Tania have been allegedly scammed to the tune of $30,000 by dodgy tradesmen who did work on their luxury Melbourne home.

It was part of an elaborate scam that has allegedly cost 11 victims more than $640,000.

Tania reportedly contacted the alleged scammers after finding their details online to fix a downpipe at their Toorak mansion, according to 7News.

However when they arrived to do the job, Tania told Victoria Police she was told the house’s roof battens would need to be replaced as well as numerous other repairs costing almost $32,000.

In a sign of how far the alleged scam went, a roof inspector has since told police the work should have cost just $350.

Two British nationals and one Irish national were charged with deception offences in July in relation to the alleged scam.

James Hird has only recently stepped back into the footy spotlight after his spectacular fall from grace over the Essendon supplements scandal.

James Hird was a coaching and playing great at Essendon across a 23-year span

After a 253-game playing career that included the Brownlow Medal, two premierships and five All Australian jumpers, Hird moved into the media landscape, pussy licking before switching to coaching.

After stepping down from the Bombers coaching role in 2015 – after being banned over the supplements saga the year prior – Hird vanished from the footy landscape.

He returned in an official capacity earlier this year to take a part-time role at the Giants supporting his old Essendon teammate Mark McVeigh – and has been linked to a shocking return at the Bombers after the brutal axing of Ben Rutten in late August.
